Using consumer fireworks on our Nation's birthday is as traditional as cookouts and parades.  When using fireworks this Fourth of July, be sure to follow the important rules listed below.

• All legal fireworks in California are called Safe and Sane fireworks and must bear the State Fire Marshal’s seal;
• You may be liable for any damages or injuries caused by your family’s use of fireworks;
• Use fireworks outdoors only;
• Light one firework at a time;
• Use common sense and keep a safe distance;
• Never point or throw fireworks at others;
• Never experiment with fireworks;
• Have a bucket of water and a hose ready before lighting fireworks;
• Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks that fail to ignite;
• Soak your used fireworks in a bucket of water for 24-hours before discarding;
• Never carry fireworks in your pockets;
• Possession of “Dangerous Fireworks” (those not approved as Safe and Sane by the State Fire Marshal’s office) is a misdemeanor crime and in some cases a felony;
• Community members wishing to turn in fireworks for disposal may contact the West Sacramento Police Department non-emergency phone at 916.372.3375 or bring them to Fire Administration at 2040 Lake Washington Blvd;

• Along with these important rules, families should promote and teach firework safety by using fireworks responsibly and setting a good example.  Have a designated adult that knows each firework, how it performs, and how to safely light it.  Make your backyard celebration not only a fantastic show for the family, but a teaching lesson for everyone present.
