WOODLAND, CA (MPG) - The Yolo County Committee on School District Organization is set to consider the adoption of a redistricting plan for the trustee areas for the Yolo County Board of Education. Every 10 years, local governments use census data to redraw their trustee area maps to reflect population change.

On December 14, the county committee will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. to seek community input and review the five proposed trustee maps for the county board of education. Public comment will be taken at these meetings and interested individuals and community groups are encouraged to participate in the process.

At the conclusion of the public hearing, the county committee may take action on the adoption of the redistricting plan for the trustee areas.

The public hearing will be held at the Yolo County Office of Education located at 1280 Santa Anita Ct. in Woodland. The meeting is also accessible via Zoom at https://ycoe.zoom.us/s/97637728971.

The Yolo County Board of Education is composed of five trustee areas. The 2020 census showed sizable population growth in West Sacramento and smaller growth in Davis and the unincorporated areas of the county.

Trustee area populations currently range from a low of 40,565 to a high of 44,997. The California Education Code requires boards of education to analyze new Census data to re-balance the population within each trustee area and redraw the area boundaries if necessary.

Trustee Area 1, represented by Matt Taylor of West Sacramento, saw its population increase from 39,275 in 2010 to 44,997 in 2020, a 14.6 percent increase that exceeded any other trustee area.

By comparison, Trustee Area 5, represented by Carol Souza Cole of Woodland, grew by 2.8 percent, from 39,477 to 40,565; and Trustee Area 4, represented by Shelton Yip of Davis, grew by only 2.9 percent, from 40,518 to 41,685.

Trustee Area 3, represented by Tico Zendejas of Woodland, grew by 11.6 percent, from 38,758 to 43,262

Trustee Area 2, represented by Melissa Moreno of Davis, grew by 8.3 percent, from 41,426 in 2010 to 44,854 in 2020.

Redistricting must be completed by the end of February. If the county committee declines to take action on the redistricting plan during the December meeting, the county committee will reconvene in January.
