WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - In honor of Black History Month, Mayor Martha Guerrero presented two Certificates of Recognition last Saturday.

The first was to Rev. Tom Kimball. Reverend Kimball is a prominent community member and a strong force when it comes to civil rights. Reverend Kimball and his wife Connie have a long history of challenges that they were faced with and overcame… all because of the color of their skin. But that has never stopped them.

Reverend Kimball and his wife have a long history of teaching people of color to be proud of who they are.  They are also known for teaching people that challenge people because of their color to open their eyes and hearts and to recognize people as people, not as a color.

The second presentation went to Baker Family Wines, located at 2568 Industrial Blvd. #120, West Sacramento, with a Certificate of Recognition for being one of the prominent West Sac businesses owned and operated by a person of color. Baseball Star, Dusty Baker, teamed up with wine maker, Chik Brenneman to create high quality wines.

Dusty Baker has played baseball with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s. In addition to playing ball, Dusty has managed the S.F Giants, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and is currently managing the Houston Astros.

Dusty’s winemaking started out as a hobby when he was growing grapes in his backyard. He teamed up with winemaker Chick Brenneman. Initially Dusty only gave his wine to friends and family, but after he received such great reviews, he and Chick decided to expand their production.

Chick received his Master’s degree in winemaking from UC Davis. He has worked for several wineries including Amador Foothill Winery, Terre Rouge/Easton, and Woodbridge Winery. He returned to UC Davis to manage their Teaching and Research Winery.

In 2013 Dusty and Chick established Baker Family Winery where they specialize in handcrafted and limited production wines that are produced from grapes sourced and harvested throughout local Northern California vineyards. The winery has a tasting room, where you can purchase wine by the glass or bottle.

Baker Family wines joined forces with Bike Dog Brewery and they share space for their tasting rooms. Tasting room hours are Wednesday & Thursday 3pm – 8pm, Fridays 3pm – 9pm, Saturdays 12 pm – 9 pm and Sundays 12 pm – 6 pm.
