WOODLAND, CA (MPG) – The Yolo County Central Landfill, located at 44090 County Road 28H in Woodland, will offer free compost to all Yolo County residents – excluding businesses and landscapers –  from April 1 – 30.

No appointment is needed; however, we require proof of residency with a driver's license or utility bill. Hours of operation are Monday – Saturday, from 6:30 am to 4 pm, and on Sundays from 8 am – 4 pm.

Please bring a shovel and bags to load the compost yourself because loading equipment is not allowed. Customers needing a large quantity of compost may inquire about purchasing compost after this free event ends or by checking it with our front administration office staff.

“This program helps the County reach its SB 1383 requirements, and it also supports our Sustainable Environment and Flourishing Agriculture strategic plan goals,” said Board Chair, Supervisor Angel Barajas. "As residents and businesses in our County start segregating green waste and food waste from their trash, this shows the full circle of how and why these new regulations benefit our community."

The compost comes from the anaerobic composter cells that started operating at the Landfill in 2019. The composter has an annual capacity of 52,000 tons per year and uses anaerobic bacteria to decompose organic waste, a mixture of green waste and food waste, in a sealed environment.

This decomposition process takes less than six months to complete and provides many benefits, including diverting organic waste from the Landfill, producing renewable energy, reducing water use and carbon emissions, and creating compost. The composting process achieves temperatures greater than 130° F and meets the requirements of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations §17855, destroying pathogens and weed seeds.

United States Composting Council laboratory tested the compost, and the Organic Materials Review Institute certified it for use in certified organic production.
