West Nile Virus is in West Sacramento

Remember that West Nile Virus is in West Sacramento. Please dispose of any standing water and take proper precautions to avoid mosquito bites. This includes your children and pets as well. Yolo County is aware and treating the known areas, but please be diligent in prevention.

According to the Center for Disease Control No symptoms in most people. Most people (8 out of 10) infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms.

Febrile illness (fever) in some people. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Most people with febrile illness due to West Nile virus recover completely, but fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or months.

Serious symptoms in a few people. About 1 in 150 people who are infected develop a severe illness affecting the central nervous system such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord).

Invasive Hammerhead Worm found in Sacramento

You will know when you see one, they have a flat hammer-shaped head that’s round on the front side. Here’s what you should know 1. They come out after rain or sprinklers soaking the ground. That’s when to look for them. 2. Do not touch it without gloves. Their mucus is a skin irritant to humans and can be toxic to pets and other small animals. Scoop it up with a stick or piece of mulch ASAP so it doesn’t get away. 3. Do not cut them in half and leave it thinking that it will die. It won’t and you just created 2 worms. 4. Info online says to kill them with salt or vinegar. Some also say to put it in a ziplock bag with salt and put it in the freezer. 5. If allowed to live, they will eat beneficial earthworms.

Yolo County Library Car & Truck Show

On August 26^th a classic car & truck show is scheduled as a joint effort between Yolo County Library and Friends of Yolo Branch Library. The event will take place from 10 am – 3 pm near the library, located at 37750 Sacramento Street, in the town of Yolo. The event is free and open to all ages. In addition to the classic vehicles, there will be exhibits including a youth lowrider bike exhibition, displays of antique fire trucks, tractors, and gas engines. Attendees can enjoy food and live DJ music, provided by Rockwell Sound & Lighting.
