Revving Up Safety
Jan 07, 2025 12:59PM ● By California Highway Patrol News ReleaseWOODLAND, CA (MPG) - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is proud to announce the addition of a motor squad to the Woodland Area office. This expansion brings dedicated motorcycle officers, or “motors,” to serve and protect the community with enhanced mobility and response capabilities.
The CHP’s motorcycle program supports efficient traffic enforcement, promotes roadway safety, and allows for greater accessibility in areas where traditional patrol vehicles may face limitations. Motorcycles can access scenes of crashes and natural disasters more quickly and work commute traffic in a way that is unique to the bike. Additionally, motorcycles play a special role in dignitary protection.
“By deploying these motor squads across our state, we’re strengthening our ability to keep California’s communities safe and ensure that our officers can reach incidents faster, especially in high-traffic areas,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “These officers are trained to provide quick, effective support wherever it’s needed.”
With the addition of the 10 new motor squads throughout the state, the CHP will have nearly 400 motor officers and sergeants. The new motor squad reflects the CHP’s commitment to enhancing public safety and delivering a responsive, adaptable approach to law enforcement.
Do you think you have what it takes to become a CHP motor officer? CHP motors must pass a two-week motor training course at the CHP Academy. The motor training course is extremely difficult. Half of the officers who attend this course are unable to pass. However, those who do graduate get rewarded with the enjoyment and freedom of getting paid to ride a motorcycle.
