YOLO COUNTY, CA (MPG) – The Yolo County Central Landfill (YCCL) invites the community to take part in the Fall Sustainability Challenge for a chance to win a $50 gift card to the Blue Barn Thrift Store, 44090 County Road 28H in Woodland.

The Blue Barn is operated by Yolo County’s Department of Community Services, Integrated Waste Management Division.

“While climate change is one of today’s most pressing challenges, small actions in our daily lives can also make a meaningful difference;” said Yolo County Board of Supervisors Chair Mary Vixie Sandy. “The increasing volume of waste in Yolo County poses real challenges for our landfill, and we need to shift more focus to reuse and composting to help reduce our environmental impact.”

To enter the challenge, participants must first choose from a variety of sustainability activities. Then, participants snap a photo of themselves participating in their activity of choice and email it to [email protected] by Oct. 20.

With permission, entries will be shared on Yolo County’s Facebook page. A winner will be selected by Oct. 31.

Sustainability activity ideas include enjoying a pumpkin spice latte in a reusable cup, going thrifting at the Blue Barn, decorating your home with compostable seasonal décor or cozying up with a book on a rainy day. You can fill a bag with books for just $5 at the Blue Barn Thrift Store.

For those interested in donating items, the Yolo County Animal Shelter at 2640 E. Gibson Road in Woodland is accepting gently-used towels. Participants can also drop them in the textile recycling bins at the landfill.

To engage in better sorting waste at home, the Waste Wizard tool found at www.YoloCounty.gov is there to help. Click on the “Trash and Recycling” icon and then the “A to Z” list.

“The Yolo County Central Landfill has a long history of thinking outside the box to motivate our residents to not only engage in the climate discussion but take action.,” said Director of Community Services Adam Fieseler. “This simple and fun challenge will support our overall goals of environmental stewardship, waste reduction and community engagement.”
