WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Singles from Luis Matos and Jesus Rodriguez provided the only two tallies of the afternoon Sept. 21 for the Sacramento River Cats, leading them to finish the 2025 baseball season with a 4-2 loss at Sutter Health Park to the Round Rock Express.
The River Cats (41-34/77-73) turned what was a 1-0 lead for the Express 43-32/77-73) after the top of the third into a slim one-run lead at the end of the frame.
Back-to-back outs put the River Cats back on their heels but a walk and trio of consecutive hits flipped the game’s momentum, with both Matos and Rodriguez earning the RBI (Runs Batted In) on singles through the left side.
Unfortunately, that lead did not last long as the Express struck back for two in the top of the fourth inning, using a Trevor Hauver walk and Omar Narváez single and turning them into two runs, thanks to an Alex De Goti double and Jax Biggers single.
One final insurance tally for Round Rock came during the eighth, with De Goti earning yet another RBI on a sacrifice fly that brought home Cooper Johnson.
Charged with the loss was Will Bednar, who allowed the two runs in the fourth during his second career Triple-A appearance, his first career Triple-A loss.
Both Matos and Dayson Croes ended with a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4 although just the former had a double and RBI. Sacramento drew just one walk, a free pass that belonged to Thomas Gavello in an otherwise 0-for-3 effort with one run scored.
The River Cats have finished the 2025 season and will return to the diamond in 2025. For the full 2026 schedule, visit www.rivercats.com.
