WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - The City of West Sacramento reminds residents to properly dispose of fats, oils and grease (FOG) this holiday season to avoid sewer clogs and backups. Proper FOG disposal is simple and protects your pipes and community.
Follow the following easy tips for fats, oils and grease-free drains.
Never pour fats, oils and grease down the drain or garbage disposal.
Scrape or wipe excess grease and food scraps into the trash before rinsing dishes or cookware. Use a sink strainer to catch small scraps and empty it into the trash.
Use cool water, not hot, when rinsing dishes. Hot water temporarily melts grease, which hardens later and sticks to pipes.
Dispose of grease properly: Pour small amounts into a disposable container and toss it in the trash.
Handle large quantities of oil safely: Drop off used cooking oil at the Yolo County Landfill from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Seniors 65-plus or disabled residents can call 530-666-8856 for free pickup. Never put bulk oil or liquid fats in the garbage.
Fats, oils and grease buildup is a leading cause of sewer backups. If you experience an issue, report it through West Sac Connect online at www.cityofwestsacramento.org/services/west-sac-connect.
