DAVIS, CA (MPG) - Yolo County has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a qualified consultant to provide design services for the County Road 32A Railroad Crossing Relocation and Grade Separation Project.

The project would relocate the existing at-grade crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks near County Roads 32A and 105 approximately 1.4 miles east and replace it with an overhead bridge crossing. The current crossing includes a sharp roadway alignment that has posed long-standing safety and operational challenges. County Road 32A is an important route for agricultural vehicles, commuters, vehicles traveling to the Yolo County Central Landfill, and cyclists traveling between Davis and Sacramento.

“This project is about making this at-grade railroad crossing safer for everyone who uses it,” said Sheila Allen, chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors. “The current crossing presents significant safety challenges for drivers, bicyclists, the many garbage and recycling trucks that utilize this road, and people traveling by rail. Advancing the project into design is an important step toward a safer, long-term solution for everyone who relies on County Road 32A.”

The project has been in development for several years. In 2021, the Board of Supervisors directed staff to pursue funding for a grade-separated crossing developed through a multi-year study and stakeholder process. The project would eliminate the existing at-grade road and railroad crossing and provide a new overhead crossing farther east.

The County has since secured two grants of $4.16 million each to advance environmental and design work. The California State Transportation Agency awarded the first grant in 2023, and the Federal Railroad Administration awarded a second grant through its Railroad Crossing Elimination Program in 2025.

The RFP will allow the county to select a consultant to advance design of the project. Construction funding has not yet been secured, and the county continues to pursue state and federal grant opportunities for the construction phase.
