YOLO COUNTY, CA (MPG) - Travelers who use the Freeport Bridge should plan for weekday daytime closures beginning Monday, Nov. 2, as Sacramento County completes structural repairs to the bridge.
The Freeport Bridge will be fully closed to vehicle traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays through Monday, Nov. 30, weather permitting. The bridge will reopen to traffic each evening.
The bridge crosses the Sacramento River approximately four miles north of Clarksburg and connects South River Road in Yolo County with Freeport Boulevard/State Route 160 in Sacramento County.
During the closures, detour signs will direct travelers around the work area. Motorists traveling to or from the Clarksburg area should plan for weekday daytime detours through West Sacramento to the north or across the Paintersville Bridge on State Route 160 to the south.
Sacramento County’s contractor, Accelerated Construction and Metal LLC, will repair structural steel welds on the bridge deck. Sacramento County maintains the Freeport Bridge, while Yolo County shares in the cost of ongoing bridge maintenance.
Sacramento County initially sought to complete the work during nighttime hours to reduce daytime traffic impacts. However, the U.S. Coast Guard could not approve the restrictions on marine traffic needed for an earlier construction period. In addition, Sacramento County determined that lower nighttime temperatures and higher moisture levels in November could affect the quality of the structural welding work. The repairs will therefore take place during daytime hours.
“We understand that this significant closure period will especially impact Yolo County’s Clarksburg area residents and business owners,” said Oscar Villegas, Yolo County District 1 Supervisor. “Though it is a long construction period, the effort spent by Sacramento County and Yolo County to complete these necessary structural weld repairs will provide many years of safe, future use of this important Sacramento River crossing in the region.”
The schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions, work progress or other unforeseen circumstances. Travelers should allow additional time, follow posted detour signs and flagger instructions, and use care around workers and construction equipment.
