WEST SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – The city of West Sacramento recently initiated work on a $1.9 million project to improve roadway safety.

Workers broke ground last month on the Park Boulevard Resurfacing and Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project in an effort to make the busy city corridor safer.

Repairs to 1.1 miles of Park Boulevard between Jefferson Boulevard and Stone Boulevard include repaving work, restriping of bike lanes, improving crossing visibility through the addition of colored pavement and new signage.

The project is being funded by money from Measure O, a 1-cent sales tax approved by voters in November 2024.

Measure O is designed to provide approximately $20 million annually for general city services, with funds going to repair roads, maintain parks and trails, and expand police and fire protection.

Work on Park Boulevard will be done by the city’s new public works road crew, West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero said.

Repairs to Park Boulevard will be completed in-house this fall, allowing surface treatment, striping and colored pavement work to begin in spring 2027.

“This project does more than improve one stretch of road; it creates safer crossings for pedestrians, a more comfortable connection for cyclists, and smoother road conditions for motorists and motorcyclists throughout our community,” said Verna Sulpizio Hull, West Sacramento mayor pro tem and councilmember.

Also, the West Sacramento Capital Projects Department recently secured $955,000 in grant money through the Sacramento Area Council of Governments’ System Preservation Program.

This funding will support pavement preservation along Harbor Boulevard between West Capitol Avenue and Rice Avenue, helping smooth pavement and repair potholes.

In all, the board of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments approved $46 million in funding for 24 projects to cities and counties across the region, which was announced in late September.

The System Preservation Program invests federal transportation money into maintaining, paving and rehabilitating major roadways across a region made up of El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties.
